A temple inside the sea- Devipatinam Navagraha Temple, Navapashanam Temple
A coastal village located around 80 km away from Rameshwaram and around 15 km away from Ramnad, Devipatnam is also a popular shrine to visit during Rameshwaram tour. Devipatnam is one among the three prominent shrines of South Coast Tamil Nadu. Devipatnam, along with Rameshwaram and Thiruppullani are associated with the Hindu sacred epic Ramayana. Also known as Navapashanam, this holy town is famous for the Navagraha Temple, which is visited by almost every devotee.
Devipattinam temple is associated with Lord Rama. There are many legends related to this ancient temple. According to the legends, Lord Rama when going for war so as to kill Demon Ravana who had kidnapped Goddess Sita, had worshipped Lord Shiva along with Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati and Adi Jagannatha Perumal. Lord Rama also offered his prayers to navagrahas by installing nine different stones, each symbolizing the nine celestial bodies. It is said that since then, 9 navagraha stones are located in the sea, at a distance of about 100 meters from the sea shore. These can be seen in morning when the level of sea water is low; however in evenings when the tides are high and the level of sea water is also high, most of the navagraha stone lie submerged in the water.
pilgrims can walk their way in the sea to this place. depth near the temple is about 4 feet and The deities are partially or fully immersed in the sea water the deities were visible 2-3 feet height outside the sea during day times, If the water level got high they were submerged inside the sea. In the morning time, the water level would have got reduced with which one can walk and perform Pooja. Even now if you want to do Poojas and other rituals such as dhosham parikarams and offerings it is recommended to visit this place in the early morning by 5 – 6 AM. For a normal visit, it is fine to go anytime in the day now, as they have built a bridge to reach the Navagraha and pathway to go around rounds of the Navagraha.
When go visit?
You can visit this temple anytime when you planed a tour for Rameshwaram. The temple timings is 4:00 am – 1:00 pm
4:00 pm – 8:30 pm.
How to reach?
If you want to take a public transport as a mode of transport, you can take buses from Ramanathapuram, Rameshwaram or from Madurai to reach Devipattinam bus station. There are several buses available along this route. It is 15km from Ramanathapuram and would be a 30 mins ride in a bus. The temple is 500mts walk from the bus stand, autos also would be available.
