Hare Island (muyal theevu) |
People who want to travel alone or with their loved ones, can choose this Pearl city of Tuticorin. All tourists know the name Hare Island or Muyal theevu. Locals call this island in the name of Pandiyan theevu. History has it that as the indigenous people of this coast, famous for pearl fishing, the Paravars, resorted to mass conversion, they were persecuted by the Nayaks of Madurai, that may be a reason for the name "Pandiyan theevu". It is located at a mere distance of about 6 Km in the east of Thoothukudi and is the closest island of the city. Due to its proximity to the city, Hare Island attracts numerous visitors over the weekends all the time.
