Catherine falls-A hidden gem of Coonoor
Are you a solo traveller or planning a trip with your family to somewhere to feel the beauty of nature? Then the Catherine falls would be the right gateway for you. Situated in the Nilgiris district, Catherine Falls lets you enjoy a stunning waterfall falling from an altitude of 250 feet. Why I stated it as a Gem because you can relax here and rejuvenate away from the monotony of everyday life's busywork.

Catherine Falls is named after Catherine Cockburn, the wife of M. D. Cockburn. He is the one who introduced coffee plantations in Kotagiri. The waterfalls and the greenish environment with a cold climate would definitely addict you towards it. About 7 km away from Kotagiri and 21 km from Coonoor, Catherine Falls offers beautiful views of the Mettupalayam plains, dense forests and the surrounding hillocks. Catherine Falls is a double-cascaded waterfall located in Kotagiri, The Nilgiris District, Tamil nadu and it is also a major tourist spot in Kotagiri.

This waterfall has both lower and upper falls. The upper fall drops to the floor, and is the second highest in the mountains. The waters from the upper stream of the Kallar River are crossed by the invisible Mettupalayam-Ooty road beyond the mountains in the south-west. The native name of the Catherine Falls is Geddhehaada Halla, meaning "Foothills Dale River". If you go to Dolphin's nose, you can get the complete mesmerizing view of this Catherine falls. This vantage point allows you to truly appreciate the awesome power that Mother Nature has contained within a waterfall as you look down the 250 feet to the pool of water and its surrounding landscape below. To reach the top of the hills tourist should take a diversion at Aravenu on Kotagiri - Mettupalayam road. Tourists can also go for trekking around the falls, it would be a better place for the beginners too.

When to visit?
Although Catherine Falls maintains its charm throughout the year, the ideal time would be after the monsoon i.e., from October to May, then only you can enjoy your trip with a pleasant climate. Avoid visiting in summer because the water level get decreased.
